Speeches

Hi Families!

Last night, and tonight a planning sheet was sent home for speech writing.  The kids have worked really hard in class to start these off.
I've found in the past that they are a fun project for families to work on together, so I've sent them home to be finished off for homework.  The kids WILL have time in class to work with me if they are unable to work on them at home.  Otherwise they will begin to present these speeches on Monday.

I am excited about what the kids have come up with so far, and can't wait to see what they have at the end!

Any questions you know my email!  Just drop me an email and I'll get back to you ASAP.
Again - if you can't do this at home, no stress, there WILL still be time at school for the kids to work with me on this project.

All about New Zealand - our research projects

Hello everyone!

Well term three has started with a bang!  We are well underway with our learning and things are getting exciting.  We have started with our very first individual research projects this week!

Every child has their own New Zealand town to research.  We will be using the chrome books for this challenge, so you can access their thinking at home!

What you need to do to access this at home.

First

Your child will need to sign in to their school account.  They can do this from any computer using google chrome.

I will send home passwords and emails so that you can do this together at home.

Next, go to google docs.  It's the blue button called Docs.  You can find it by clicking on the 9 little squares on the google homepage (see the above picture)

This will take you to your google drive where all your docs are stored.  Click on your town doc.  (You screen will look different to this, but similar!)

I already have access to all the kids work, they shared it with me.

To make life easier for you, you can open up a google search right there in your doc.  Click on the tools button and then research.  This will open up the research bar on the side.

If you are stuck with your research while you are doing it, you can add a comment, which will send me an email so I can go on your project while you are working on it.

You can comment, or I can comment.  It's really easy to be working together on it!

Teach your monster to read

Hey everyone!

Mr Plant showed us a really cool website that we are using in our reading now.  Today we played on it for our reading lesson.

It's called "Teach your monster to read".

It's completely free and the kids take their monster through different worlds practicing different sounds.  For those kids that are confident readers, it's still really good to help with their spelling knowledge.

I will send home login details tonight so that you can play at home if you want.

Thanks!

Poetry Writing

Today we did something a little bit differently for writing.  Miss Sherwood showed us this really interesting picture and we talked about all the different things we could see.  We talked about how to write some interesting poems, and about how they can sometimes seem a little bit weird.  Here are some of the poems we wrote this morning!

Lava in the air
You smell smoke everywhere
In the scene I can see fish
Camels made out of orange dust
Hills in the background
People in the trees
Rivers go round and round
The people see a treasure box
Swirly trees with people
- Loki

Lava in the air

You smell smoke everywhere
Fire in the distance
Fish swim everywhere
There's a boat on fire
- Lawrie

In the sea fish swim

Quick fish, swim faster!
Here comes a whale!
Colours fill the air
An elephant calls to its mates
Volcanoes exploding!
So smoke fills the air
There's also a flood every now and then
No one wants to live there
The fish swim
The elephant runs
The whale dives
Everyone flies in such a rush you cannot see them
- Sophie

Fire in the distance, fire in the air

Elephants walking everywhere
Camels sprinting through smog and dust,
To climb the mountains to reach the clouds
Breathe the air
Smell it fresh
Dream of it there
- Finn

Wow!! Aren't you impressed!  These kids are so creative!

Holiday fun!

Well I hope that you are all enjoying your holidays!  Easter is over, and the weather is not looking the nicest.

If you have been up to anything really exciting, and want to share it here on our blog, just write it up and send me an email at erin@tkp.school.nz and I'll put it up here for everyone to read.  Make sure mum and dad know what you're doing though!

Otherwise I'll see you all in a couple of weeks.  Get ready to work hard!  Things are going to get tougher in term 2.

Enjoy the rest of your holidays!

Our first experience with Google docs

Hey family!

Today was a really exciting day!  After all the rain we had last night, Rob found two frogs in the school pool this morning!  He gave them to our class - we think they might possibly be Jeffery, and Jeffery Junior!

There is one that is really bright green, and the other one is dark green.

We used this as inspiration to do our very first research project.  We used our Chromebooks to find out facts about frogs, and centipedes, and bats.  Then we filled out this google form.  We learnt that when we finish filling in a google form it sends all the information to a different sheet for us to read about.

Kids - If you would like to find out some more information about frogs, centipedes, bats (or anything else) over the weekend, you can sign in to google with your school account and fill in the form HERE.  You can't access this form unless you have your school email and login.

Sophie brought in a giant centipede for us to look at!  It was super huge and scary.

We learnt how to use Google to find information about frogs, centipedes, and bats.

It was really hard learning how to log on!

Working together in a group made our learning easier.
It was really fun seeing our answers pop up on the screen when we hit enter!
Some other things from the week.  We practiced our spelling words using playdoh.

Some of our kids practiced their handwriting using the white boards.

We have had a very busy week, and are looking forward to next week!  Share your highlights from the week in the comments below kids!
